Celebrating the
Full Moon and the lunar Cycle
The moon has always had a great significance for those who practice Witchcraft. It is seen as a symbol of the Goddess, and its waxing and waning cycles are associated with her changing aspects of Maiden, Mother, and Crone. The beauty and magnificence of the full moon touch many, but for witches it is a sacred night full of power and magic.
Some witches only practice magic on the night of the full moon. Others also use the different energies of the dark moon, the new moon, or the entire lunar cycle. As with everything else witchy, there is no wrong way. In general, however, the waning moon (after the full moon and until the new moon) is used for magic that deals with decrease, or things you want to be rid of, as the moon grows smaller. The waxing moon, as the moon grows more visible from the new moon until right before the full moon, is used for increase, or things you want more of, as the moon grows larger.
The dark moon, when the moon isnât visible at all, is sometimes used for banishing, but it is also good for meditation, inner work, cleansing, and divination. Some witches choose not to do any magic at all at this time. The new moon, when the first sliver of light appears, is great for new beginnings and starting magical workings that will go through the entire month.
The full moon is considered to be the most powerful time of the month, and many witches save their most important magical work for then. While the full moon is technically only one night, many magical practitioners consider its energy to be in force for two days before and two days after, so donât panic if you canât get to a spell right on that night. (This rule also applies to the sabbats, which is handy if your group wants to get together but canât make it on a Tuesday.)
You can vary your full moon practice to keep it in tune with the changing seasons if you like. In the spring use newly blossoming flowers as part of your ritual, for instance, and in the fall do a full moon magical working with a pumpkin and pumpkin seeds. If you are a crafty witch, the full moon is the perfect time to create charm bags or herbal bath mixes or magical oils, imbuing them with the power of the moon and the Goddess it represents.
If your coven only meets once a month, you might want to consider doing it on the full moon if you can. It is an especially witchy night, and you will likely feel the increase in energy even more when you work with a group.
The following are some simple lunar rituals you can do with a coven of any size. You can do a complete formal ritual if you likeâcasting the circle, calling the quarters, and so onâor you can skip those steps and dive right into the ritual if your group would rather do that.
